How to visit the Ducal Palace

The Ducal Palace, which serves as the headquarters for both the Provincial Administration and the Prefecture of Massa-Carrara, is not currently operated as a formal museum and does not offer a regular guided tour service. However, as the noble floor and the palace as a whole represent some of the most significant cultural heritage sites in the city and the region, the Provincial Administration allows public access to its most important rooms.

During regular office opening hours, visitors can register at the URP (Public Relations Office) to visit:
– The Courtyard
– The Terrace
– The Nymphaeum (the intriguing 18th-century grotto located directly opposite the main entrance, which houses the monumental statue of Neptune).

A printed guidebook is available at the URP, allowing visitors to independently explore and understand the history, architecture, and decorative features of the rooms.

To arrange a more extensive visit encompassing the remaining noble rooms under the Province’s jurisdiction (The Hall of the Swiss, the Hall of Mirrors, the Library and Popes’ Room, and the Presidency Rooms), you can send an email to the Presidency of the Province at: presidente@provincia.ms.it
Please specify the preferred dates and the number of people in your group.

Depending on office schedules, temporary exhibitions, and ongoing institutional events, the Presidency Secretariat will review the request
and suggest the best days for your visit. Furthermore, subject to staff availability on the requested dates, the Secretariat will confirm whether a staff member can be present to guide you through the rooms.

To visit the noble rooms that house the Prefect’s offices (The Alcove, the Chapel, and other official state reception rooms), visitors must submit a separate request by emailing the Prefecture directly at: prefettura.massacarrara@interno.it
The Prefecture will provide specific instructions and guidelines regarding access to these institutional spaces.

The Province is currently producing explanatory panels to enhance the self-guided tour experience within the Ducal Palace, alongside implementing a dedicated section on the institutional portal for an immersive virtual tour of the palace and its stunning interiors.
